Expectation Management 101: Translating Client Dreams into Legal Reality 2024

Product ID: CA3668R7
Presented By: State Bar of Wisconsin PINNACLE

An ounce of prevention

Some of your clients undoubtedly enter the legal process with inaccurate assumptions about what attorneys do, what you do in your practice, and what results are achievable. Correcting these assumptions can be key to maintaining a productive attorney-client relationship, upholding your reputation, and in some cases, keeping the Office of Lawyer Regulation at bay.

At Expectation Management 101: Translating Client Dreams into Legal Reality, a panel of attorneys from different backgrounds and experiences who have “seen it all” will help you understand how to manage clients’ expectations. They’ll offer sound guidance on how to:

  • Establish boundaries and set realistic goals with clients
  • Impress on your clients the importance of being honest and disclosing all relevant information
  • Prepare clients for the potentially embarrassing and/or stressful legal process
  • Manage cost expectations by carefully explaining fee arrangements
  • Communicate with clients about their bills
  • Document your actions in a way that benefits your clients and yourself
  • Withdraw from representation when necessary
