Property Assessment Law in Wisconsin 2025

Product ID: CA3889R8
Presented By: State Bar of Wisconsin PINNACLE

Assessing property assessments

A single property assessment can trigger a dispute worth millions.  When a commercial landlord argues an assessment is inflated or a homeowner challenges the number on their tax bill, attorneys are called on to evaluate the standards, methods, and underlying evidence. Because assessments are the foundation for property tax liability, the stakes in excessive assessment actions are high.

Property Assessment Law in Wisconsin walks you through the assessment process from start to finish. You’ll explore the principles that guide assessors, the appraisal concepts that influence value, and the procedural paths that determine how challenges move from the Board of Review into circuit court.
