Lessons from Ferguson: Municipal Court Debt Collection in Wisconsin, Missouri, & Nationwide 2022

Product ID: CA3389W
Presented By: State Bar of Wisconsin PINNACLE

Fallout from Ferguson

The 2014 police killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and subsequent grassroots protests and advocacy put a spotlight on Ferguson’s policing and municipal court debt collection practices.

The activism in Ferguson, combined with local advocacy and a DOJ “Dear Colleague” letter to state court administrators, prompted municipal court debt collection studies in Wisconsin. At Lessons from Ferguson: Municipal Court Debt Collection in Wisconsin, Missouri, and Nationwide, you’ll examine the results of those studies and how what happened in Ferguson is shaping opinions, policies, and practices in Wisconsin and around the nation.
