Steven Hughes is an Assistant State Public Defender in the Waukesha Office working in the State Public Defender’s Trial Division. Steve has been an Assistant State Public Defender for the last eight years and has handled thousands of cases representing a plethora of different types of cases. He has won multiple awards for his litigation skills including the Kuchler-Nicholson-Stilling Sensitive Crimes Award for winning a felony sexual assault trial.
Steve has extensive experience working on local committees, serving on Criminal Justice Coordinating Committees, and treatment courts. He also helped with the founding of a local pretrial release program to reduce pretrial confinement. Steve is involved in his local community, both through pro bono work and other volunteering.
He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 2015 and has an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In his free time, Steve participates in endurance racing, having completed five Ironman triathlons and 16 marathons.
