Preparing Your First Adult Guardianship Petition 2024

Product ID: CA3705R2
Presented By: State Bar of Wisconsin PINNACLE

The goods on guardianship

Guardians for adults are appointed by courts to act in the best interests of individuals who are found incompetent to make personal, financial, contractual, or medical decisions on their own behalf. They offer protection to adults who are unable to provide for their own personal care or custody or who are unable to defend themselves from abuse, or exploitation. Because guardianships remove certain individual liberties, they should not be approached lightly, and judicial oversight is required.

Preparing Your First Adult Guardianship Petition is your guide to the ins and outs of the guardianship process from start to finish. Dayna J. Lefebvre will introduce you to basics such as the different types of guardianships and their purposes, as well as the duties, powers, and limitations of guardians. You’ll also explore jurisdiction and venue, selecting the guardian, and permanent versus temporary guardianships.

Get up to speed on pre-hearing requirements, including:

  • Guardianship training
  • Examining a doctor’s report
  • Comprehensive evaluation
  • Bond approval
