What is the Wisconsin Law & Practice Educational Component?

It's an online course series designed to help applicants satisfy the 21-hour requirement under SCR 40.04(10). The subject matter areas are based on the diploma privilege requirements in SCR 40.03 and have been approved by the Board of Bar Examiners (BBE).

Who needs to complete this requirement?

Anyone seeking admission to practice law in Wisconsin after passing the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) or transferring a passing UBE score from another jurisdiction.

How many credit hours do I need, and what is the deadline?

You need 21 total credit hours, with at least 12 coming from the "core" subject areas. Credit hours are awarded upon successful completion of each course's required viewing and the accompanying affidavit affirming you viewed it in its entirety.

What are the "core" subject areas, and how many hours do I need in each?

You must complete a minimum of 2 credit hours in each of the following six categories, designated by the BBE:

• Criminal Law
• Ethics & Professional Responsibility (EPR)
• Evidence
• Family Law
• Torts
• Trusts & Estates

You can take more than 12 core credits if you'd like, but you need at least 12 to satisfy the rule. The remaining 9 hours can come from either the core or optional curriculum, and courses can be completed in any order.

What is included in each course?

Each course includes video lectures, course materials and readings, and an estimated credit hour value based on total instructional time.

How do I track my progress?

Your learner dashboard shows completed and incomplete courses, credit hours earned, and how many core subject credits you've completed toward the 12-credit minimum. Progress updates automatically once you complete the required viewing and affirm it through the affidavit.

How do I get my Completion Report, and how do I submit it to the BBE?

Once you have determined that you have met the required criteria and completed the appropriate 21 credit hours, click on the COMPLETION REPORT button and Follow the directions on that tab. 

You will be required to submit the following:

• Your professional name (first, middle, last)
• NCBE#
• Attached copy of the COMPLETION REPORT as a PDF file

PLEASE NOTE: Applicants are responsible for checking the status of their pending admission file, which may be done either by accessing your online account with the Board of Bar Examiners (BBE) or by contacting the Board of Bar Examiners (BBE) directly. Please note that the State Bar does not automatically upload the Wisconsin Law & Practice Educational Component to the online application system. It must first be processed by the Board of Bar Examiners (BBE) before it appears there, which may take several days to complete.

Does completing this course series count toward Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements?

No. This course series is designed solely to satisfy the educational component requirement under SCR 40.04(10) and does not qualify for CLE credit.
