What You Need to Know About the General Certification Test

Overview

The General Certification Test is a closed-book, standardized exam that evaluates a paralegal’s substantive knowledge and practical skills in several areas of Wisconsin law. The exam is designed to ensure that certified paralegals meet the highest standards of professional competence.

  • Format: 100 multiple-choice questions
  • Content Areas:
    • Civil procedure
    • Criminal law
    • Family law
    • Real estate law
    • Estate planning and probate
    • Legal ethics
  • Passing Score: A score of 85% or higher is required to pass.
  • Testing Windows: The exam is offered three times per year, during the following windows:  
    • February 1st to April 30th, July 1st to August 31st, October 1st to November 30th      
    • Applicants may only take the exam twice per calender year, but must wait 30 days between retests
  • Test Fees: Initial test fee $300 (nonrefundable). Retest fee $150 (nonrefundable)

Exam Rules

This is a closed-book exam. Examinees are prohibited from using or consulting any outside resources, including:

  • Mobile devices (including cell phones), tablets, or computers (other than the one used for the exam).
  • Notes, books, or printed materials of any kind.
  • Other individuals for assistance.

The computer used to complete the test should only have open the windows necessary to take the exam. Strict adherence to these rules is required to ensure the integrity of the certification process.

This is a timed exam. Examinees must complete the text within a two (2) hour timeframe.

  2. Completion Requirement: Failure to complete the test within the allotted 120 minutes will result in an automatic failed score. Partial completion or abandonment of the test will be considered a non-passing attempt.
  3. Non-Refundable: The test fee is non-refundable. Once payment is made and the test is started, no refunds will be issued under any circumstances.
  4. Once the test is purchased, it is only available to take in myMedia for 30 days. After 30 days, if the test has not been started, it will need to be repurchased at the full cost.
