Put the ball in your court

Title IX prohibits discrimination based on sex at public elementary and secondary schools, as well as federally funded colleges and universities. Under Title IX, educational institutions are obligated to provide equal opportunities for students – regardless of gender – to enjoy the benefits, opportunities, and treatment provided for athletic teams. Recently, the U.S. Department of Education (the Department) has engaged in rulemaking that would formally amend Title IX regulations for the first time in decades. But with the new regulations delayed for several months, schools are left in the awkward position of complying with existing regulations while trying to prepare for an entirely different slate of rules.

At Equal Athletic Opportunity Under Title IX, Hannah L. Chin will guide you through new resources provided by the Department’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) to help school officials determine whether their institution is satisfying its duty to provide equal athletic opportunities.
