When a rhyme becomes a crime
In a highly publicized Atlanta trial, 17 sets of rapper Young Thug’s (Jeffery Williams) lyrics were admitted as evidence against him in a criminal case.1 According to one study, rap lyrics have been used as evidence in nearly 700 cases since the late 1980s.2 Because it is almost exclusive to rap music,3 the use of lyrics as evidence raises questions about racial discrimination.
