Project Attorneys – Legal Action of Wisconsin
<strong>Project Attorney (1) Green Bay Office <br />and <br />Project Attorney (1) Madison Office</strong> <br /><br /><strong>VOCA-Funded Legal Services Network for Victims – Mental Health Treatment Records</strong> <br /><br />This position is funded by a Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grant as part of a pilot project to provide civil legal aid to victims of sexual assault to protect their privacy and other rights when defense counsel requests their mental health treatment records. <br /><br />One attorney will be placed in Legal Action’s Madison office and one in our Green Bay office. Applicants should indicate their office preference in their cover letter. <br /><br /><strong>KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: </strong><br />• Under the supervision of the project’s supervising attorney, project attorneys will provide high-quality and aggressive civil legal aid to project clients in the project’s test counties, continually meeting Legal Action’s standards for written and courtroom advocacy and client communication. <br />• Consult with client about the effects of the defense motion on their privacy and other rights and determine the most desirable outcome for the records request and then proceed with legal advocacy to achieve that outcome, performing all duties associated with that advocacy. <br />• Closely communicate with other project staff about accepting cases, progress on existing cases, progress toward project’s overall goals, and development of this area of practice and case law. <br />• Contribute to the processing of referrals in the referral queue and conducting fact-finding and screening on referrals. <br />• Assess the training needs that are necessary to provide these services and participate in training to address those needs. <br />• Continually stay abreast of changes in this area of law and in this area of practice as it develops. <br />• Develop development and maintenance good working relationships with referral agencies and with state and local bar associations. <br />• Provide training and other assistance to members of Legal Action's Volunteer Lawyer Project and other Legal Action staff. <br />• Perform intake duties and, where necessary, make appropriate referrals to other community agencies. <br />• Stay current on tracking all case work and other time in the program’s database and in other record keeping systems as the project requires. <br />• Project staff attorneys may train and supervise paralegal staff. <br />• Attend and actively participate in all meetings of project staff. <br />• Travel will be required to multiple counties. This will include traveling to receive training on substantive law, project-related meetings and tasks, attending court hearings, and to provide clients with legal services. Some clients may be unable to travel and the attorneys may need to travel to clients’ homes in those cases.
